چکیده

The filled skutterudite compound PrOs4Sb12 exhibits superconductivity below a critical temperature Tc = 1.85 K that develops out of a nonmagnetic heavy Fermi liquid with an effective mass m∗ ≈ 50 me, where me is the free electron mass. Analysis of magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, electrical resistivity and inelastic neutron scattering measurements within the context of a cubic crystalline electric field yields a Pr energy level scheme that consists of a Γ3 nonmagnetic doublet ground state that carries an electric quadrupole moment, a low lying Γ5 triplet excited state at ∼ 10 K, and Γ4 triplet and Γ1 singlet excited states at much higher temperatures. The superconducting state appears to be unconventional and to consist of two distinct superconducting phases. An ordered phase of magnetic or quadrupolar origin occurs at high fields and low temperatures, suggesting that the superconductivity may occur in the vicinity of a magnetic or electric quadrupolar quantum critical point.

Electrical Resistivity and Magnetization Measurements on the Heavy Fermion Superconductor Pros 4 Sb 12

The filled skutterudite compound PrOs4Sb12, the first example of a Pr-based heavy fermion superconductor, displays superconductivity with Tc ∼ 1.85 K and has an effective mass m ∗ ∼ 50 me, where me is the free electron mass. For magnetic fields above 4.5 T, sharp features in the normal state electrical resistivity, magnetization, specific heat, and thermal expansion data suggest the occurrence ...

Charge-doping-driven evolution of magnetism and non-Fermi-liquid behavior in the filled skutterudite CePt4Ge(12-x)Sb(x).

The filled skutterudite compound CePt(4)Ge(12) is situated close to the border between the intermediate valence of Ce and heavy-fermion behavior. Substitution of Ge by Sb drives the system into a strongly correlated and, ultimately, upon further increasing the Sb concentration, an antiferromagnetically ordered state. Our experiments evidence a delicate interplay of emerging Kondo physics and th...

Heavy fermion superconductivity in the filled skutterudite compoundPrOs4Sb12

The filled skutterudite compound PrOs4Sb12 has been found to exhibit superconductivity with a critical temperature Tc = 1.85 K that develops out of a heavy Fermi liquid with an effective mass m ∗ ≈ 50 me. The current experimental situation regarding the heavy fermion state, the superconducting state, and a high field, low temperature phase that is apparently associated with magnetic or quadrupo...

BCS theory of p + h - wave superconductivity

– Recently the superconducting gap functions of the skutterudite PrOs4Sb12 have been proposed [K. Maki et al, Europhys. Lett. 68, 720 (2004)]. The superconductivity is spin-triplet and consists of at least 2 distinct phases in a magnetic field, which bears some resemblance to superfluid 3 He. Here we present our analysis of the thermodynamic properties of these two superconducting states within...

Direct observation of quadrupolar excitons in the heavy-fermion superconductor PrOs4Sb12.

We report inelastic neutron scattering experiments performed to investigate the low energy magnetic excitations on single crystals of the heavy-fermion superconductor PrOs(4)Sb(12). The observed excitation clearly softens at a wave vector Q=(1,0,0), which is the same as the modulation vector of the field-induced antiferro-quadrupolar ordering, and its intensity at Q=(1,0,0) is smaller than that...
